- Story Text: The World's richest golf tournament, the Pacific Masters, opened on Thursday (5 October) at the Sobu Country club, Inzai, near Tokyo. A total of 84 golfers from seven countries teed off in pursuit of a first prize of 65,000 dollars (27,000 pounds sterling), or one of the runners-up awards which total 300,000 dollars (720,000 pounds sterling).
Phil Rodgers, from the United States, took the first round lead with a five-under-par 66. He was one stroke ahead of fellow-Americans Gay Brewer and Al Geiberger, and Australia's David Graham. But the man many had come to see, Lee Trevino (United States) paid for not practising on the tough course, and struggled to keep down to a par 71 -- though he told reporters he would whittle at least four strokes off on the second round now he knew the course. Trevino had been a doubtful starter, and only arrived late the night before from San Francisco, where his wife is recovering from bronchitis.
The tournament will end on Sunday (8 October).
