- Story Text: Japan's most popular -- and oldest -- twin sisters arrived in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei on Friday (May 19) in their first foreign trip in nearly 103 years.
The twins, known simply as Kin and Gin (Gold and Silver), received a warm welcome from 11 Taiwanese twin boys and girls when they arrived at the Taipei International Airport.
Kin and Gin, who turn 103 in August, were invited by a flower theme park in central Taiwanese city of Taichung for a four-day visit.
At a news conference the twins wore kimonos and appeared in good spirits. They said "how are you?" in Mandarin and sang a Japanese children's song.
When asked about the secret of their longevity, Gin, whose full name is Gin Yanie, said it depended on perseverance. Kin's full name is Kin Narita.
The twins were discovered through a television commercial for a mail-order company in the early 1990s, and then went on to produce a record of traditional songs along with a group of children.
They were born in Nagoya, central Japan, in 1892. They have 10 children, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
During their stay in Taiwan, the twins will meet a group of 1,050 pairs of Taiwanese twins, triplets and quadruplets on Saturday (May 20) in Taichung. It will be a record twins' gathering that will probably require a new entry in the Guinness Book of Records.
