- Story Text: The upcoming World Cup soccer tournament has inspired
one international lingerie firm in Japan to create the perfect
fit for soccer fans who want to show off their own 'cup'.
The makers of the latest FIFA licensed product are
hoping for success with their lingerie named somewhat
mysteriously "Hat trick".
But the manufacturer says the three strategically placed
soccer balls not only symbolise the three goals in a soccer
hat-trick - they also make a perfect pun in Japanese where
'hatto' is an expression of wonder.
Triumph International is aiming, they say, for the female
soccer fans and those who feel they need a little extra
support at the Korea-Japan World Cup.
"It's just like any other bra. This bra feels
comfortable," assured model Anri Takao.
Available only in soccer-pitch green, the polyester bra
features football-shaped pads in black and white imitation
leather, topped off with a trim designed to look like a goal
net.
Included in the 17,000 yen (132.7 U.S. dollar) price tag
is a pair of matching briefs, printed with an image of hands
catching a ball.
Manufacturers Triumph International say the underwear,
which will be available in a limited edition of 100 sets from
Japanese department stores ahead of the tournament kick-off on
May 31, is a cup in itself.
"This year the World Cup will be held in different
countries in Japan and Korea. We thought it's perfect fit for
our products. We've got right cup and left cup. You can
consider that the right cup as Japan and the left cup is Korea
or the other way around. It's perfect fit," said Christian
Thoma, an executive at Triumph International Ltd.
"More than 50 percent of Japanese soccer fans are ladies.
I talked to a few of them and they said they wouldn't even be
scared to wear this product openly during a soccer game, so it
is quite encouraging," Thoma added.
