Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia ended his four-month title drought when he beat German Boris Becker 4-6 6-3 7-6 in the final of the one million-dollar Tokyo indoor tennis tournament on Sunday (October 14).
The win was especially sweet for the world number three, who also beat world number one Stefan Edberg of Sweden 7-5 6-3 in the semifinals. It only took 88 minutes for Lendl to subdue Edberg, his successor as the world number one. The Czechoslovak lost to Edberg in the semifinals of last week's Australian indoor championship in Sydney as well as at Wimbledon in July.
Edberg, outgunned by Becker in the Sydney final, committed a series of costly errors after looking in control for much of the first set.
Lendl, the former world number one, who lost his position to Edberg in mid-August, had been without a tournament win since he beat Becker at the Stella Artois grass court championship in London last June.
Lendl's victory was his fifth of the season and his third in the 13-year history of the indoor tournament, earning him 122, 700 dollars. Becker received 66,000 dollars as runner-up.
Lendl dropped the first set as the world number two played a solid serve-and-volley game and the Czechoslovak committed a flurry of backhand groundstroke errors.
But the U.S.-based Lendl took a 4-1 lead in the second set with a series of powerful serves and sparkling passing shots and went on to take the set.
Lendl finally clinched the match with a rich array of passing shots to win the third set tiebreak 7-5.
