  • Story Text: British, French, Russian and United States (U.S.) planes were put on display at South Africa's first international military air show at Waterkloof airforce base outside Pretoria on Thursday (October 5).

    Among aircraft to be seen at the start of the four-day show attended by 31 nations were the British Hawk 100 trainer and ground-attack jet, the French Mirage 2000 B, Russia's MiG-29 and Sukhoi SU-35 and the U.S. F-16 "Fighting Falcon".

    The South African Air Force (SAAF) also showed off its Mirage F1, now powered by a Russian engine, its newly-acquired Swiss Pilatus PC-7 Astra trainers and the locally-built Rooivalk attack helicopter.

    The show is the culmination of 75th anniversary celebrations of the SAAF.
