____________________________________________________________________ Veteran tennis stars John McEnroe and Yannick Noah gave the benefit of their experience to young hopefuls in the giant South African township of Soweto on Friday (October 18).
With a population of more than two million, there are few courts for the township's players to practice on and they are in poor condition.
McEnroe and Noah hope the dilapidated courts at the Arthur Ashe centre, named after the late American who is the only black man to win a Wimbledon title, can be rebuilt.
In South Africa for a senior's tournament in Johannesburg, the pair spent the morning on court helping to improve the basic skills of the young players.
McEnroe, who won three Wimbledon singles titles in the 1980s, said he welcomed the chance to visit Soweto and hoped he could increase the popularity of the sport among the black population.
The young players needed a chance to play to show their potential, added McEnroe, who is making his first visit to the country.
He and Noah have reached the semi-finals of the Champions Tour tournament along with Bjorn Borg and Johann Kriek.
Frenchman Noah said he felt very much at home, the children being exactly the same in both countries, and he added there was much expensive work to be done on the Arthur Ashe centre.
