- Story Text: U.S. pop star Michael Jackson arrived in South Africa on Thursday (July 18) where he met with President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg and visited the black township of Soweto.
He was to travel to the gambling resort of Sun City where he is expected to announce the opening of a big theme park.
The controversial singer was greeted at Johannesburg airport by about 200 yelling fans.
Jackson, whose album "Thriller" was one of the biggest selling in history, is not due to give any concerts during his three-day visit but will address a news conference at Sun City, 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, on Friday (July 19).
Bodyguards held a blue and white umbrella over Jackson to keep off the wintry early morning sun. The black singer has said his increasingly pale complexion is the result of a skin complaint.
From the airport Jackson went to meet President Nelson Mandela, where he sang "Happy Birthday" to Mandela, who celebrated his 78th birthday on Thursday.
Jackson and his entourage then visited Avalon Cemetary in the black township of Soweto, where fans met him around the June 16 memorial for the hundreds of black youths killed in widespread anti- government riots in 1976.
Condir Zuqubu, a local musician, said: "We are blessed to have Michael Jackson here in South Africa. On behalf of musicians, we are very happy and do welcome him home."
