- Story Text: If you like a bit of custard tart, Johannesburg was the place to be on Saturday (May 20). The Salvation Army had done a spot of baking and the result was the biggest traditional South African milktart in the world.
The band played as 25 square metres (82 square feet) of cream and calories sprinkled with five kilograms (11 pounds) of cinnamon went on display at a Johannesburg shopping centre to raise money for charity. Half of it was sold to shoppers while the rest was distributed to the poor.
The tart is part of the Salvation Army's annual fundraising campaign, which continues until the end of May.
The day was hailed a success by Major Denis Lorimer, the Army's public relations secretary for southern Africa. He said hundreds of people had invested in a slice.
Dutch custard tart specialist Arie Kuyvenhoven masterminded the creation, which had to be baked in nine different pieces.
The tart will be entered into the Guiness Book of Records... as soon as they can think of a category to put it under.
