  • Story Text: Representatives of 36 African nations and 15 non-African nations attended the Third Regional Conference of African Commissions for UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) in Addis Ababa -- Ethiopia's capital -- which opened on Saturday (29 June).

    The six-day conference, held in the Africa Hall, was inaugurated by Ato Tadesse Terrefe, Ethiopia's Minister of Education and Fine Arts and the Chairman of the Ethiopian National Commission for UNESCO.

    National Commissions for UNESCO are liason bodies established in each member state for the purpose of providing closer links between the Organisation's world headquarters in Paris and the governments and peoples concerned in its programme. The National Commission act as advisers to their governments over UNESCO policy and -- in some cases -- help to carry out UNESCO's activities.

    One of the major topics to be discussed by the conference will be an increased participation by African National commissions in the work of UNESCO, with special attention to the priority objectives in the field of science and technology.

    Other main points on the agenda deal with increasing co-operation between National Commission and with other bodies.

    The conference will also discuss implementing the recommendations made last January in Dakar, Senegal, by a UNESCO-sponsored council of Ministers. These called for closer co-operation between UNESCO, the Economic commission of Africa and the Organisation for African Unity -- especially in the scientific field.
