- Story Text: Ethiopia has said it has asked the Organisation of
African Unity (OAU) to modify its plan to end the war with
Eritrea, taking into account its sweeping battlefield gains.
In Washington, the U.S.government said Eritrea had now
withdrawn from all the parts of Ethiopia occupied in 1998,
while Ethiopia had given assurances it would pull out from all
Eritrean territory once Eritrean forces had left its land.
However, more fierce fighting was reported by both sides.
Ethiopia launched a huge ground and air offensive
against Eritrea more than two weeks ago to recapture territory
it says had been occupied by its Horn of Africa neighbour
since their border war broke out in May 1998.
On Tuesday (May 30) it announced a partial pullout from
western Eritrea, saying it had accomplished its military
objectives, but that fighting would continue until Eritrea had
withdrawn from all "occupied" territory.
It said Eritrean forces were on the verge of "collapse"
and had abandoned their positions on the eastern front in
Bure.
However the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
said on Tuesday that Ethiopian forces had captured the western
town of Tesseney, some 30 km (18 miles) from the border with
Sudan. It is the furthest the Ethiopians have advanced
westwards.
Eritrean presidential spokesman Yemane Gebremeskel said it
seemed the Ethiopians had captured the town.
A UNHCR statement said 10,000 Eritreans had crossed into
Sudan in the last 24 hours.
Both sides reported heavy fighting along their 1,000-km
(600-mile) border, with a particularly intense battle reported
on the central front near Adikeyhe, Eritrea.
Eritrean field officers said they had turned the tide
against Addis Ababa.
On the central front, Ethiopian troops pushed to within
100 kms (60 miles) of the Eritrean capital, Asmara, at the
weekend. But a Reuters correspondent in Adikeyhe - which
appeared on the verge of falling on Sunday - said the
Eritreans seemed to have regrouped and were now claiming
advances of their own.
