- Story Text: Former Brazil soccer striker Romario is arrested for failing to make alimony payments to his first wife Monica Santoro, with whom he has two children.
Former Barcelona and Brazil striker Romario was arrested on Tuesday (July 14) in Rio de Janeiro for neglecting to make alimony payments to first wife Monica Santoro.
Romario, who helped Brazil win their fourth World Cup title in the U.S. in 1994, had to spend the night in a police cell.
The player, who has two children from his first marriage, slept on the ground along with two other men arrested on similar charges.
Police chief Carlos Augusto Nogueira said Romario denied his ex-wife's allegations.
"He claims to have paid the alimonies and he has the copy of the payment records. His lawyer had to go to his office downtown to prove he has made the payments," he told reporters.
But authorities later said Romario was still owing Santoro some $45,000 dollars worth of interest rates following late payments.
Court officials are set to decide whether the footballer will be released later on Wednesday, but police said he might be transferred to a Rio prison.
Romario, 43, had two of his six children with Santoro before they separated in 1995. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
