Summary:On August 2, 1934, one of Germany's 20th century heroes died. He was Paul von Hindenburg, Germany's President, who died in office at the age of 87. Hindenburg was a soldier who had already retired when the first World War broke out in 1914. He was recalled to service and made supreme commander of German forces. Despite defeat in war, he was still a hero and became his country's President. It was he who appointed Adolf Hitler as chancellor in 1933.
