- Story Text: New Year's Eve revellers and stranded walkers have enjoyed a three-day lock-in at Britain's highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn in a wild and remote part of the Yorkshire Dales.
Ten guests had booked to stay in the pub, 1,732 feet (528 metres) above sea level, whilst 20 other walkers and cyclists ended up taking refuge there after being rescued from the snowy moors.
The 30 stranded helped trapped bar staff run the bar and organise food, as relentless snow storms caused drifts of up to 7 feet.
Landlady Tracy Davy said everyone pulled together to pull pints, keep warm and cook inventive meals from dwindling food supplies.
"It might be a mismatched meal, you know, but it will be food. But after 30 people being here for three days you start to dwindle down, especially if you think to yourself 'well, I've got no more potatoes, so shall we have rice with our 'egg and chips' or something," she said.
The Tan Hill Inn is so remote, gritters and snow-blowers were unable to make it up to the moor.
On Monday (January 4) people were able to leave the pub.
Across much of Europe temperatures have been freezing. Berlin woke up to sub-zero temperatures of around minus 4 degrees centigrade (25 Fahrenheit) and a thin layer of snow meant that drivers as well as people on foot had to be extra careful as roads were slippery.
In Brussels lakes were frozen over and a thick layer of ice covered much of the Belgian city.
The Belgium Royal Weather Institute (IRM) forecast the frozen weather would last most of the week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
