- Story Text: Peruvian bolero singer Lucho Barrios died on Wednesday (May 5) in a Lima hospital after a long-term battle with kidney and respiratory problems.
Seventy-five-year-old Barrios was considered the main disseminator of bolero in Peru, Chile and Ecuador. He lived the remaining years of his life connected to a respirator and suffering from diabetes.
Doctor Cecilio Zamora from the Dos de Mayo Hospital told local radio Barrios' death occurred from complications of his various health problems.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia said the singer's death is a great loss for Peru and for music fans.
"I didn't think - I didn't think that Lucho Barrios was so serious. It is painful for Peru and for man lovers of bolero," he said.
On Wednesday evening, friends and family turned out at the National Museum to pay their respects to the singer.
"I remember him as a good father, as a good friend, a great artist - with this memory, he will live forever," said his daughter, Milagros Barrios.
"Latin America has lost a great singer, and that is Lucho Barrios. And unfortunately another 100 years will have to pass for another Lucho Barrios to emerge. It is very difficult because there's only one like him every 100 years," said his friend Guillermo Medina.
Some of Barrios' biggest hits included "Mi nina bonita" ("My pretty little girl"), "Me enganas mujer" ("You deceive me woman") and "Mi viejo" ("My old man"). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
