- Story Text: Bosnia experienced record levels of snow on Saturday (February 4). One metre of snow paralysed the capital Sarajevo where public transport stopped running on Friday (February 3) afternoon.
Flights out of Sarajevo were cancelled and the terminal almost deserted. Only a few passengers were stuck at the airport trying to organise their journeys.
"Nobody can help us. 'It's not our problem, it's not our problem, drive by yourselves.' How, how can I do it? 'We don't know, we don't know, we are in Sarajevo, not in Belgrade'," said Dmitri Berman from St. Petersburg.
In Serbia, a rescue mission from the town of Svrljig, some 320 kilometres south east of Belgrade, tried to reach the nearby village of Davidovac, 20 kilometres away.
The village of about 400 people was snowed in on Friday night and rescuers tried to take food and medicine to a sick baby.
But the snow plough leading their convoy got stuck in the snow and later broke down completely, so the rescuers had to turn back.
"Well, because the truck broke, which is what happened here, we have to stop the rescue mission - we are carrying supplies for the baby, diapers, detergent, food. We will try later," said Milija Miletic, the mayor of Svrljig.
The Serbian government has so far declared a state of emergency in 19 municipalities in the south and east, where six people have died from cold. The government also advised business and private households to reduce their energy consumption to help prevent shortages. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
