- Story Text: A look at the Hollywood actor's public life as he turns 50
American actor, Brad Pitt, who has been one of the most prominent A-list Hollywood stars for two decades, turns 50 today (December 18).
Born William Bradley Pitt in Oklahoma in the United States, the actor first came to the world's attention playing the womanizing hitchhiker J.D. in the movie 'Thelma & Louise'.
He got his first leading role in the Robert Redford directed 'A River Runs Through It' in 1992, and then continued as a leading man in 'Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles' and 'Legends of the Fall', both in 1994, then solidified his career in thrillers 'Se7en' and 'Twelve Monkeys' in 1995.
Since then, he has appeared in a slew of hit films including 'The Devil's Own' (1997), 'Meet Joe Black' (1998), 'Fight Club' (1999), 'Snatch' (2001), Ocean's Eleven (2001), and Troy (2004).
However, his film career is not the only focal point for Pitt; his love life has often been the centre of attention in gossip magazines and entertainment media.
The attention first started when he began dating fellow A-list actress Gwyneth Paltrow in 1994 and they eventually got engaged, but split up in 1997.
His next relationship which caused headlines was his relationship with 'Friends' actress Jennifer Aniston. They began dating in 1998 and on July 29, 2000 they married in a private ceremony in California, United States.
In 2005, they divorced amid speculation that Pitt had been having an affair with his co-star Angelina Jolie in spy action thriller 'Mr & Mrs Smith'.
The pair played down reports they were having a relationship despite being spotted together on several occasions. Confirmation of their relationship only became official when Jolie announced that she was pregnant in January 2006.
Since then the couple, who are nicknamed 'Brangelina', have become arguably Hollywood's most famous couple - not only for their personal life but also their film work.
In 2006, Pitt went into producing movies as well as acting in them. His producing credits to date include 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford', 'Kick-Ass', 'World War Z' and '12 Years a Slave.'
His acting career has become consolidated with lead roles in such films as David Fincher's 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds', and Terrence Malick's 'The Tree of Life'.
To date, Pitt has been nominated for three Academy Awards ('Moneyball' and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' as a leading actor, and 'Twelve Monkeys' as a supporting actor) but still has yet to receive an Oscar. He also received an Oscar nomination for his position as producer of 'Moneyball' in Best Picture category. He has won a Golden Globe as Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for 'Twelve Monkeys'.
Brad Pitt is also known for his humanitarian work. In 2006, he founded the Make It Right Foundation which helped rebuild New Orleans after it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. In the same year, he travelled with Jolie to Haiti to support Yele Haiti, a food distribution program. Later that year, along with his partner Angelina Jolie he set up the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to aid various causes around the world.
He is currently filming 'Fury' about a crew of Americans on a mission in Nazi Germany at the end of World War II. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
