- Title: Head Of Nigerian Muslims Sultan Maccido Killed In Plane Crash
- Date: 29th October 2006
- Summary: At 10:28 a. m. (0928GMT) on October 29, 2006, Flight 053 took off from Abuja airport bound for the north-western city of Sokoto. The Boeing 737-2B7 of ADC Airlines with 105 passengers and crew on board, was one minute into its flight and still within the boundary of the airport, when the plane plunged to earth, crashing 1 mile (2kms) from the end of the runway in a tree filled field. Emergency services rushed to the scene and found debris spread over an area the size of a football field, with only the aircrafts tail, an engine and part of a wing still recognisable. Only 9 people survived the impact. Tragically amongst the dead was Sultan Muhammadu Maccido, the 19th Sultan of Sokoto ( seen here in 1996 )and the spiritual leader of tens of millions of Nigerian Muslims. Also aboard the doomed flight was the Sultans son, Muhammed Maccido, as well as Abdulrahman Shehu Shagari, son of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari. Maccidos body was later flown to Sokoto where he was buried late that night. The Sokoto state government then declared 6 days of mourning for their lost leader. On November 2, Nigerian authorities named Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III as Sokotos new Sultan. WARNING:LOCAL MUSIC LICENCES MAY APPLY.
