- Story Text: Mangueira samba school, one of the most traditional groups in Rio de Janeiro, is pulling together the final preparations for this year's carnival parade, which will celebrate the women of Brazil.
In the so-called "City of Samba" warehouse, designers, seamstresses and construction workers are getting the skates on to finish the allegorical floats and intricate costumes which will parade down the Sambodrome, when carnival begins on February 13.
The pink and green school, known for its wide and dedicated fan base, received support from the United Nations for this year's parade honouring the women of Brazil.
Mangueira was founded in 1928, and was the first school to include women amongst its composers.
One section of the parade will use intricate costumes made entirely of household objects, celebrating the work of many women within the home.
Historical female figures and artists will also be represented in the parade, which designer, Anderson Alves, explains is nearly ready for the big day.
"We are in the final stages. The costumes are now being handed out amongst the community, and we have started to receive our special guests who have been invited to parade with the school. They were here today to pick up their clothes. The floats are now being completed too, we are fixing the lighting, which is the final stage of the allegorical floats. So now we are just waiting for the big day to arrive," Alves told Reuters TV on Monday (February 2).
Last year, Mangueira's parade spoke of the different forms of dance and celebration throughout Brazil, declaring in the theme tune that Brazil's party spirit is pink and green.
According to Alves, all of Brazil cheers for Mangueira, and the parade will be a national affair.
"There is nothing like Mangueira, the best school on the planet. We have got the largest fan base, the best colours in our flag, community dedication like no other. Everyone who is part of it is Mangueira at heart. Brazil is Mangueira. So what can we expect from a nation watching its beloved school inside its parading stadium? There is no need to wonder - just watch Mangueira parade," said Alves.
Mangueira finished in eighth position in last year's parade competition, and will parade on Sunday, February 15. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
