- Story Text: Twenty-four beautiful young women from all corners of
Africa recently gathered in South Africa's Sun City for the
prestigious 'Face of Africa' modeling competition.
The competition isn't just a ticket to the fashion world
for the lucky winner, but also a good event for modeling
agencies to check out new faces.
In a few hours, an African model will see her life
transformed forever.
By the end of the evening, the winner of the Face of Africa
competition will enter the elite world of international
modeling.
The event, organised by M-Net TV and Anglogold, took place
recently in Sun City Superbowl, a glittering entertainment
centre in South Africa.
And of course the crème de la crème of South African society
couldn't miss out on the party.
Tunisia, Senegal, Kenya, Namibia, the 24 competitors came
from all corners of Africa.
The winner will get a 200 000-dollar contract with the Ford
modeling agency in New York.
In line with trends in international modeling, this year's
contest saw some very young ladies hit the catwalk.
Eritrea's candidate, Lia Berhane is only 15.
The jury was not looking for classical beauty, but for the
kind of stage presence that electrifies a fashion show.
Before these striking girls made it to South Africa, they
had to pass a tough selection process.
For many months, organiser Jan Malan and his colleague
Ipetla Moatshe [EE-pet-lah moh-at-sheh] , held castings in
30 African countries to find the final 24 models.
Dar es Salaam in Tanzania was one of the many stops where
local hopefuls met the scouting team in a chic hotel.
The height requirement was the first hurdle, with one metre
seventy-four centimetres set as the minimum. And the other
measurements had to be as close to the 90-60-90 ideal as
possible.
After passing the first tests, the aspiring supermodels were
briefed on the possible rewards, but also the pitfalls, of a
modeling career.
Next stop: Bujumbura, capital of Burundi. The country's two
candidates have just been selected. Both of them are 16:
Floriane Kwizera [floh-REE-ann kwee-zeh-rah], 1m77, and
Francine Ndabateze 1m 79.
Backstage on D-Day. Dressers and the best hair and make-up
artists in South Africa have all gathered for the final
brush.
This is not a beauty pageant. There's neither a swimwear
parade nor a question-and-answer section. The point is to
find a model who will work for prestigious designers and
grace the pages of international magazines.
The competition is certainly a springboard for success.
These three former winners are living proof.
Nombuleleo Mazibuko [noh-mboo-leh-leh-oh mah-zee-boo-koh]
was last year's winner, and Benvinda Mudenge [moo-dengeh]
was catwalk queen in 1999.
Last but not least, Oluchi Onweagba [oloo-chee
on-weh-ag-bah], was the Face of Africa in 1998. This
gorgeous Nigerian now features regularly in fashion
magazines and has won a contract with an American clothing
brand."
She says "I can't really say what's gonna happen to
tonight's winner. We only have to hope for the best. She's
gonna have a fantastic life, travel all over the world,
hopefully make tons and tons of money and she's gonna have a
great time."
The Ford Modeling Agency is not just here to find a top
African model. This is also an important business venture
for the New-York-based company.
Says Katie Ford, CEO. Ford Models International "I don't
describe African beauty different from any other beauty. I'm
looking for somebody who is a model, who's going to work in
the international market place."
The show is coming to an end, and it's time to select the
five finalists.
The Senegalese competitor is overwhelmed. She's in the top
five, alongside candidates from Zimbabwe, Eritrea, Tanzania
and Ivory Coast.
And the Face of Africa 2001 is Ramatoulaye Diallo?
20 year old Ramatoulaye Diallo [ram-ah-too-lie dee-al-loh]
from Senegal, is the New Face of Africa.
Back home in Dakar she used to do occasional modeling for
local designers. Now she will join one of the two biggest
modeling agencies in the world.
Says Katie Ford "The winner, Ramatoulaye is awesome. She has
an incredible body. Beautiful face that's very symmetrical
and most importantly she has an aura that shines. When she
walks out you cannot help but notice her and that is a star
model."
This shy young girl is now struggling to come to terms with
her sudden success. Ahead of her lies an exhilarating life
of travel and adventure.
She says "This is going to change my life, because I'm going
to meet lots of famous people. I think Face of Africa puts
you at the top. But up to now, I don't know what to say, I
still can't believe it.I'm still wondering am I dreaming or
not. I can't believe it. I just cannot believe it."
It's not a dream come true, but rather the start of a huge
challenge. To survive as a top-model, Ramatoulaye Diallo
will have to impose her style and talent in the competitive
and unforgiving world of international modeling.
