Summary:The people of the Free City of Danzig go to the polls to decide whether to remain under Polish control or invite German protection. Danzig was taken from Germany after World War I and 95 percent of its population was German. Hitler's Nazi Party made a huge effort to win the vote, sending top officials such as Hermann Goering to canvas on their behalf. Nevertheless, the Nazis failed to get the two-thirds majority necessary to change Danzig's status.
