- Story Text: A car bomb parked at a Baghdad market killed at least 21 people on Tuesday (February 21) in one of the worst attacks for weeks.
The blast in the southern Dora district, the bloodiest in six weeks, also wounded at least 27 people, including children, a day after three bombings killed 19 people in the capital and broke a relative lull in guerrilla violence.
Survivors of the Dora market bombing, were unsure of the target of the bomber, who fled on foot after parking his vehicle, pursued by suspicious residents. Some said the intended target may have been a Shi'ite-dominated police patrol.
"Police were here investigating a robbery of a shop and when people started to gather and cars also a 18-passenger Mercedes bus went off, killing between 22 to 23 people and wounding others. Those who were seriously wounded were about 28 and we took them to Yarmouk hospital," said Abdel Amir Fahad, a shop owner in the area .
An Interior Ministry official said the 27 wounded were nearly all civilians, while a hospital source said medics were treating at least 32 people injured in the explosion.
Witnesses said people in the market spotted a man park the car and make off despite efforts to apprehend him.
The southern district of Dora has been a battlefield in recent months between rival sectarian factions of Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims.
Twelve people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus in a Shi'ite area of northern Baghdad on Monday, which along with several less bloody attacks has ended a relative lull in violence as political parties wrangle over the formation of a new government. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
