- Story Text: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony bring Puerto Rican salsa star Hector Lavoe to life on the big screen in "El Cantante". The movie, which was produced by Jennifer Lopez focuses on Lavoe's rise to fame, his notorious drug abuse and intense relationship with his wife Puchi.
"They just had a very, kind of, rollercoaster relationship - very tumultuous, very passionate. I believe that there was a lot of love there," said Lopez who plays Puchi in the film.
The movie also tackles the tension between newly arrived immigrants from Puerto Rico and Nuyoricans, New Yorkers of Puerto Rican descent, through Puchi's relationship with Lavoe's sister.
Marc Anthony, who is often called the "king of salsa", grew up listening to Lavoe's music, which became the soundtrack to a cultural awakening in the late 1960's among New York City's Latino community. It was a natural for him to play the lead role.
While Lopez and Anthony who like Lavoe have become famous, they have not succumbed to the pitfalls of fame. But they understand how it can happen.
"Fame is a very difficult thing to deal with and nobody ever wants to hear that because we always want to think it's a glamorous, beautiful thing that's so easy but honestly there's a lot of eyes on you and I think that if you don't know who you really are and people are saying all kinds of things about you, it's hard to stay grounded," said Lopez.
