Summary:Bonneville Salt Flat, Utah, on September 3 1935: the car was Bluebird and the driver, the British speed record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell. A World War I fighter pilot, Campbell held records for speeds on land and water. But on this day, he broke through the 300mph barrier. His record of just over 301mph remained until after his death in 1948. In 1939 Campbell established the water speed record at 141mph, a record which stood for almost ten years.
