- Story Text: Tom Cruise's "M:I:3" cast mates praised their co-star on Wednesday (April 19) , one day after the birth of his and Katie Holmes' daughter, Suri.
Cruise was to have been with his castmates at the film's series of junket interviews , but Suri's early morning birth the day before precluded him from taking part in the promotional barnstorming for the film, which opens on May 5.
Castmates were only too happy to provide members of the media with positive tales of Tom Terrific.
"When you're a young actor -- I'm 28 years old -- and you get the chance to work with arguably the biggest movie star in the world and the most successful movie star in the world, you listen and you learn a a lot about what you can do, what your possibilities are in the movie industry," said Brit Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. "Tom makes these possibilities a reality because they're a reality for him. You suddenly learn that all these things you thought were out of your reach are really within your reach, all it takes is a lot of hard work."
Hong Kong action star Maggie Q, playing Zhen, fellow IMF agent to Cruise's Ethan Hunt. "I mean Tom makes it a point to make you comfortable. Because Tom is so smart, he wants a great product, and the only way to get that is to make sure that everybody has the tools to do a great job. And for him to know that and to be able to execute that with us is key in making a good film and he knows that. As a producer and the biggest movie star in the world really, he has that formula down. And so he kind of impressed that upon me and I'm sure other people in the film, and we kind of followed his lead."
Former "Felicity" star Keri Russell is also along for the ride as another IMF agent. She looked to Cruise for guidance in the film's intricate stunt scenes. "He's so experienced in doing all these things. I have to say he was so great, and especially in doing all the falls and all the gun work, you know big shoot-out scenes. He really had a way of making you feel capable of doing it and necessary in the scene. Like, he could have been many things but he was very generous in that respect."
Russell also saw how real-life events had there affect on her famous co-star and the film they were shooting. "I'm sure, as an actor your life always affects your work, and yeah, the stories about his character deciding to kind of settle down and be married ... and he was definitely falling in love at that point."
Cruise and Holmes enjoyed a whirlwind Hollywood romance that ranked as one of the most high-profile celebrity courtships in recent memory, one that morphed into the tabloid sensation known as "TomKat."
The couple began dating last April. But in the minds of the public, the early days of their romance date to Cruise's manic,couch-hopping profession of love for Holmes on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in May.
Weeks later, the two announced their engagement at a Paris news conference, saying Cruise had popped the question at the Eiffel Tower. They have not set a wedding date, but Cruise said in a recent interview with GQ magazine that they were looking to tie the knot sometime in late summer or early fall.
In "M:I:3" Michelle Monaghan plays Julia, Cruise's love interest in the film, whose life is put in danger when his dangerous profession intrudes on his personal life. Monaghan was pleasantly surprised to find Cruise down-to-earth and accessible. "It was such a tremendous opportunity and of course I had my own perceptions walking into it, thinking 'oh my gosh, he's not going to talk to me, he's going to spend all this time in his trailer,' you know. And it couldn't have been further from the truth. He was such an incredible guy, he was so open and accessible and he worked as hard on camera as he did off camera. And I was saying earlier, I had some really challenging scenes in this film that I really struggled with, and he couldn't have been more patient or more supportive."
