- Story Text: A book to be released in Lisbon on Thursday (July 24) says that British missing girl Madeleine McCann died inside the apartment from where she vanished on May 3 last year.
The publication, written by former Portuguese police investigator of the case Goncalo Amaral, says among its conclusions that the abduction of the little girl was a simulation and that the death of the three-year-old toddler "may have been a result of a tragic accident ."
Amaral was abruptly suspended from the inquiry last October after declaring the girl's parents Kate and Gerry McCann to be suspects.
"Kate Healy and Gerald McCann are suspected of involvement in the hiding of the body of their daughter," he says in the book.
Portugal's chief public prosecutor on Monday (July 21) dropped the case pending any new leads and cleared her parents of suspicion of involvement.
Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz as her parents dined in a tapas restaurant with friends nearby.
Despite a huge police investigation and massive coverage in the Portuguese and British media, she has not been found.
The third suspect in the case, Algarve property consultant Robert Murat, 34, received 600,000 pounds sterling in libel damages from four newspaper groups last week over "seriously defamatory" articles.
Murat and the McCanns all strenuously deny any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
