- Story Text: By the end of June 1970, the prominent African airline Air Afrique will be offering a new D.C.8 service between Europe and Senegal. On Friday (May 29) the plane which will inaugurate the new service showed what may come in the future by flying non-stop from near the world's best-known film centre, Hollywood, to the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
The president of the Air Afrique airline, M.Cheikh Fal, inspected the interior of the new aircraft at Dakar, shortly after the completion of the 12-hours flight. He told reporters that the D.C.8 was economically the ideal aircraft to operate the African network.
Twenty-two people made the non-stop flight from the Douglas company's airstrip at Long Beach, near Los Angeles.
The new aircraft was to be christened "Fort Lamy" on Monday (June 1) at the Chad town of that name. Then it was due to go on to Le Bourget for three weeks, for cleaning and other operations.
