  • Story Text: Four of Africa's top athletes -- including Henry Rono of Kenya -- have been dropped from the list of participants scheduled to compete in the World Athletics Cup in Montreal later this month. Rono, Filbert Bayi of Tanzania, and others were left off the team because of their failure to take part in African Championships held in Dakar, Senegal over the weekend.

    SYNOPSIS: The Men's 400 metre, Final, was one of the most exciting races of the four day meeting.

    Mountaga Diakhate of Senegal had trouble with his first hurdle -- but he didn't let the initial setback stop him.

    Former world record holder John Akii-Bua of Uganda was at the championships, but only as a spectator.

    At the final hurdle the race was still very close. But Daniel Kimayo of Kenya crossed the tape first, thereby earning himself a place on the Africa team that's on its way to Montreal
    The African team which will compete in Canada is preparing itself by spending two weeks in Europe before flying to Montreal.

    Bacary Grace of Ghana will represent Africa in the women's 400 metres on the strength of her win on Sunday (4 August). Miss Grace crossed the line in 53-point-33 seconds -- more than a second ahead of her nearest rival, Mariemo ???oye of Senegal. In the women's fifteen hundred metres, Sakina Boutaim??? of Algeria lead the field going into the bell lap, followed closely by Rose Thomson of Kenya. Sakina Boutaime, who had won the women's three thousand metres just two days before (3 August) had just too much of a finishing kick for the firl from Kenya. She won with a time of four minutes, twenty-three point six seconds.
