  • Story Text: In Senegal on Monday (12 December), a conference aimed at making better use of technology in Africa opened in the capital, Dakar. The conference will last six days.

    SYNOPSIS: The University of Dakar was the venue for the meeting, which was opened by Senegal's Prime Minister, Mr. Abdou Diouf. On arrival he was greeted by university officials who were responsible for organising the gathering.

    Delegates came from a number of universities both in Europe and Africa, and were welcomed by Mr. Andre Kergreis, Director of the Food Technology Institute at the University of Dakar.

    Discussion at the conference centred on how African countries can make better use of Western technology. Delegates looked not only at What equipment is now available, but also how it should be adapted to meet local conditions. Speakers also devoted some time to the question of training Africans in the new techniques necessary to use modern equipment. Naturally enough, a good deal of the conference was devoted to discussing developments in agriculture, an occupation which involves huge numbers of Africans, in Senegal and else-where.
