- Story Text: For those looking for an alternative lifestyle, here is an apartment literally out of this world. Based on the interiors of Star Trek spaceships Enterprise and Voyager, this studio-flat in the small town of Hinckley in Leicestershire is coming up for sale on eBay in the last week of March.
The flat was constructed by interior designer Tony Alleyne in 1997 and after living there for ten years, the Star Trek fan has decided to let go of it.
"I think as a project it's gone its distance. It started off in 1997 and you can only go so far I mean over the last two years it's been refitted to Star Trek Voyager and as far as I'm concerned it's gone the distance", he told Reuters Television.
Alleyne decided to embark on the project after he separated from his wife in 1995 and managed to turn his flat into a bachelor pad with a difference. Not your usual DIY, but with meticulous eye for detail, Alleyne was determined not to miss a thing. His friends and neighbours thought he was mad and whilst his wife was pleased to see him focus on the project, Alleyne says she would not be prepared to live in the flat.
"Most people thought I was barmy, I mean you can go spend a lot of time down the pub or whatever. I decided to live in a spaceship," he said.
The flat does come with all the necessary mod cons, but there are two things it's missing. Instead of a bedroom , Alleyne built a transporter room because, he said, he doesn't need a bed. Suffering from sciatica, his doctor advised him to sleep on the floor for a while. Alleyne took to the idea and promptly threw out his bed.
"I always think bedspace is overrated anyway because you've got a bed that's what, six by four foot and it's just a waste of space... what is it two thirds of your life you're supposed to spend sleeping?" he said.
Alleyne is also not a great believer in cooking and so only has a microwave and no oven.
If anyone is interested in the flat of the future, the initial starting price according to the interior designer is 200,000 US dollars.
Once the flat is sold, Alleyne is hoping to move into a fresh apartment and embark on a new project, this time with a different theme. Star Wars perhaps?
For now, there needs to be a new captain on this ship.
