- Story Text: Passengers from an Italian airliner, victims of a hijacker armed with a toy pistol, flew back to Rome early today (Sunday) after being Briefly detained in Cairo. The crew was expected to be released from Cairo later in the Day.
The returning passengers said that there had been initial alarm when they heard that the hijacker -- an Italian -- had produced a gun and ordered the pilot to fly to Cairo. But everyone had managed to remain calm.
When the Alitalia DC-9 landed in Cairo the hijacker was promptly arrested. The authorities found that the weapon he was carrying was a children's toy pistol. Meanwhile, the 30 passengers were entertained to dinner by Italy's Ambassador to the United Arab Republic.
Among the passengers were two businessmen bound for Israel. They were among the 28 who flew back to Rome. A British couple left the return flight at Athens -- their original destination before the Genoa-Rome Alitalia flight was hijacked.
