- Story Text: THIRTEEN MILES NORTH OF MALACCA, AN ANCIENT SEAPORT OF MALAYA, THE FUTURE HEADQUARTERS OF THE 28TH COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE THE BIGGEST NAAFI SHOPPING CENTRE FOR THE FORCES HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.
AT THE TERENDAK CAMP, THE NAVY, ARMY, AIR FORCE INSTITUTE SHOPPING ARCADE WAS OPENED ON JUNE 5 BY MRS. W.C. WALKER, WIFE OF THE GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 17 GURKHA DIVISION, MAJ. GEN. W.C. WALKER.
BEFORE THE CENTRE WAS OPENED THE NAAFI COMMAND SUPERVISOR MR. D.C.H. CLEMENTS WELCOMED MRS. WALKER AND OTHERS.
THE SHOWROOM OF THE SHOPPING CENTRE HAS 4,000 SQUARE FEET AND IS FILLED WITH GOODS OF ALMOST EVERY DESCRIPTION - RADIOS, RECORDS, HOME APPLIANCES, PERFUMES, BICYCLES, JEWELLERY, SPORTS EQUIPMENT AND EVEN TOYS. FOR THE WOMEN THERE ARE THE ADDITIONAL ATTRACTIONS OF BEAUTY SHOP AND WOMEN'S CLOTHING SHOP.
INCLUDED IN THE CENTRE ARE SERVICE SHOPS LIKE BARBERS, TAILORS, WATCH AND ELECTRICAL REPAIR SHOPS AND A FLORIST.
AMONG THE OTHER SERVICES ARE DAILY DOOR-TO-DOOR SUPPLY OF FRESH MILK AND BREAD FOR FAMILIES LIVING IN THE CAMP.
AT THE PUB CALLED THE CROWN EQUALITY PREVAILS. BOTH GENERALS AND COMMON SOLDIERS FOUND EQUAL PLACES AS WELCOME CUSTOMERS. THE PUB IS EXPECTED TO BE A HIT AMONG THE MEN.
NAAFI OFFICIALS SAID THEY ARE OUT TO MAKE THE SHOPPING FACILITIES THE BEST IN THE WORLD, AND MEET THE NEEDS OF EVERY SERVICE-MAN AND FAMILY IN THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE. THE CAMP MAY HAVE AT TIMES AS MANY AS 5,000 TROOPS WITH THEIR FAMILIES.
THE COST OF THE SHOPPING AND OTHER FACILITIES WAS ESTIMATED AT QUARTER MILLION POUND STERLING.
