- Story Text: A Brazilian housewife who underwent fertility
treatment to get pregnant has given birth to what doctors are
calling the heaviest quintuplets in history.
The 31-year-old Ana Lucia Dias da Costa and her
husband celebrated the birth of four boys and one girl, all
weighing over 2.2 pounds (one kg) each.Together, the newborns
weigh 12.8 pounds (5.8 kg).
"The babies were born with a gestation period of 31 weeks,
which is a record. There is no record of quintuplets arriving
at that gestation age and another record was the weight of all
the babies. They were born each weighing more than 1
kilogram," said Dr.Adalberto Fernandes, who delivered the
babies.
International specialists have yet to confirm the
conclusions made by local doctors.
The quintuplets, who were born over the weekend, were two
months premature.
Costa, who was already a mother of two, resorted to
fertility treatment to get pregnant for the third time. Many
women have given birth to multiple babies after undergoing
such treatments.
"It is an emotional victory that has no comparison. It
is a happiness that is five times greater, everything is
multiplied by five," said Costa.
A local diaper factory said it will donate 700 diapers a
month for the infants.
