- Story Text: American Mario Andretti and Belgian Jackie Ickx today (Sunday) completed the hat-trick for Ferrari by winning the BOAC 1,000 kilometres Sportscar Race of Brands Hatch - the fourth time the Italian car has finished first in this season's World Manufacturers' Championship qualifying events. Second place also went to a Ferrari, driven by Australian Tim Schenken and S??? Ronnis Peterson. The third Ferrari - driven by Switzerland's Clay Regezzoni and Britain's Brian Redman - shadowed the leaders for over 200 laps, but ignition trouble then forced them back into sixth place, preventing the Italian stable from scoring a 1-2-3 sweep.
Ickx took the lead after only 50 of the 235 laps had been run, and dictated the pace before handing over to team-mate Andretti who roared on to win.
The race is the longest in Britain's motor sport calendar - and the six-hour marathon took its toll - with only a dozen of the 23 starters finishing.
SYNOPSIS: Brands Hatch on Saturday - and the start of the longest competition in the British motor sport calendar: the BOAC thousand-kilometre World Championship Sports Car Race. Favourites were the three Ferraris - cars Numbers nine, ten and eleven - as the Italian stable had already won the other three qualifying events in the World Manufacturers' Championship this season.
The bright red Ferraris dominated early - with Belgian Jackie Ickx at the wheel of car number eleven taking the lead after only fifty laps of the gruelling 235 of the race. He was briefly overtaken by team-mate Clay Reggazzoni - in car number nine - but the Swiss driver fall back again, and he and co-driver, Briton Brian Redman, were forced into sixth place by ignition trouble. (PAUSE) Number ten - piloted by Australian Tim Schenken and Swede Ronnie Peterson - roared into second place behind team-mate Mario Andretti who had taken over from Ickx at the wheel of the winning car, clinching the season's hat-trick for Ferrari.
