- Story Text: The multiple Grammy-nominated Deana Carter is breaking the rules of the traditional look and sound of country music with her latest album, "There's No Limit."
With a vocal style more akin to Sheryl Crow or Lisa Loeb than to Faith Hill or Trisha Yearwood, Deana Carter's stirring up the country scene. Carter's voice, textured and musical but not overwhelming, invites the listener to lean in and listen. The other key to Carter's success is her songs, which take a bolder tack than most mainstream country music tunes.
On the strength of the first single, Carter's debut album, "Did I Shave My Legs For This?," sold more than 2 million copies in its first three months of release.
Now she releases her third album, "I'm Just a Girl" going for a substantial change in formula, reflected in the title song. Says Carter, "'There's No Limit" is really about being willing to swan dive and get into a relationship and go the extra mile. Maybe work harder at it this time then you have before."
As the daughter of Nashville studio guitarist, Fred Carter Jr., Deana Carter grew up in a musical environment and was exposed to a wide variety of music. Fred played guitar for a wide variety of musicians including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and Simon & Garfunkel. The music of those artists would eventually seep into Deana's own style.
The personal and professional challenges of a divorce and a separation from her former label Capitol Nashville have all found their way into her new album.
"The break for a little clarity and the ability to write the music and focus and hook up with the record label that believed in me and my vision. And going through a divorce and moving and a lot of stuff going through my life personally.
But I wrote my way through all of that so that's what we have on my record."
After the release of "I'm Just a Girl," Carter is getting set to hit the road.
"I am looking forward to the summer. We are going to be touring. It starts April 23rd with Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban so I am going to have fun. I am the luckiest girl in the world this summer coz I get to tour with some really cute guys and play music for a living. I can't imagine anything being better. Maybe a date with Hugh Grant. Maybe not."
Her latest album, with its strong acoustic guitar tones and no-nonsense lyrics, will surely help solidify Deana's growing reputation as one of country's brightest and sexiest rising stars. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
