- Story Text: London was poised for a week of fashion and celebrity parties on Friday with the launch of London Fashion Week showing Autumn/ Winter 1998/1999 ready to wear collections.
The catwalk shows of London Fashion Week are now firmly established on the fashion calendar, having launched many of today's top designers.Such names include the notorious Alexander McQueen - who now designs for Givenchy - as well as Clements Ribeiro, Pearce Fionda, Lainey Keogh, and last season's hottest stars - Matthew Williamson and Tristan Webber.
Most shows are held in specially-erected tents outside London's Natural History Museum.Alternatively, designers choose to hire outside venues, creating a more unique show.
Top model Honor Fraser - a member of the British aristocracy - appeared adorned with Union Jack bodypaint on Friday (February 20) to launch the week. The flag was the work of Tina Earnshaw, make-up artist for Max Factor.
Fraser is the face of McQueen's Couture Givenchy, and is expected to appear at several shows during London Fashion Week, including that of top milliner Philip Treacy.Due to her contract with Givenchy however Fraser is barred from appearing in McQueen's own-label show, scheduled to cause a stir on Wednesday evening.Instead she will take a front row seat.
London Fashion Week is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) - a co-operative of major retailers, fashion magazines and textile groups. The BFC committee carefully vets all the designers wishing to participate.
BFC Chief Executive John Wilson commented particularly on two designers showing in London for the first time.
Elspeth Gibson is already admired by the style cognoscenti for her chiffon and lace creations, whilst Paul Smith has for several years produced a menswear collection but is showing womenswear in London for the first time.
Young Japanese designer Taishi Nobukuni could not get an official slot in the timetable so has arranged his own show before the main ones begin.
The first show of the week - on Friday evening - is jointly sponsored by the BFC and the British Foreign Office to mark Britain's European Union (EU) presidency.Young designers from each member state will show an outfit, and suited dignitaries will mingle with fashion buyers at a reception after the show. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
