- Story Text: Police in Germany say they have recovered the body of a four-year-old flood victim and feared four other boys had drowned after persistent rains caused heavy floods in many parts of the country Police in the western town of Kaiserslautern said on Monday (November 2) the four-year-old boy fell in a stream in the nearby village of Horschbach and was carried away by the current.
His body was recovered several kilometres (miles) downstream later that day, they said.
At least another four boys have gone missing over the last two days. They were all last seen near rivers.
Hundreds of rescue workers combed flooded river banks in search of the four boys, but police said they held out little hope of finding them alive.
In the Rhine and Mosel river basins, hundreds of rescue workers and volunteers worked round the clock to reinforce dikes and flood barriers.
In the Bavarian town of Wertheim, the rivers Main and Tauber flooded their banks overnight and gushed into the old town centres.
And in the southern town of Zell the Mosel spilled over dikes and inundated the centre with 1.5 metres (yards) of water.
Residents in the western town of Koblenz, where the Rhine and Mosel meet, were ready to evacuate the area if river levels rose much higher and caused serious flooding.
Basements and bicycle paths along the rivers have been flooded over the last few days.
Shipping traffic on the busy Rhine has been suspended in the area since Saturday.
And accoring to the Duisburg water authorities, Rhine water levels were still rising. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
