- Story Text: The working script for the movie "Gone with the Wind"
is going on the auction block soon, and it reveals a little known fact about one of the film's most famous lines.
In the classic movie "Gone with the Wind", American David O.Selznick offered the censors an alternative to the famous line, "Frankly , my dear, I just don't give a damn."
If he had used it, Clark Gable (playing Rhett Butler) would have delivered the tamer version, "Frankly, my dear, I just don't care." But he didn't, and the censors penalized Selznick 5,000 dollars (USD).
The proof is in the working script on display Friday (May 28) at Sotheby's in New York.It includes the alternate line, and goes on the auction block June 12, with the auction house expecting it to fetch between 40,000 dollars (USD) and 60,000 dollars (USD).
Sotheby's specialist Dana Hawkes told Reuters Television News that the script's option of leaving out the caustic "damn" (for the times) will definitely inflate the selling price.
Hawkes said, "It's going to affect the price tremendously because that's a famous line.Everybody knows that line. You can quote that out of context and everybody will know where it's from. So, yes, that will affect the price." She added that there are annotations throughout the script, references to camera shots, office memos, and other things.
Sotheby's will have more memorabilia from the movie at the June 12 auction, including Selznick's Oscar for making "Gone with the Wind," a dress made for the character Scarlett O'Hara played by Vivien Leigh, and a Confederate jacket made for the character Ashley Wilkes, played by Leslie Howard. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
