- Story Text: King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain threw flower bouquets into the sea to commemorate soldiers who died in the Spanish-American naval battle in Manila bay one hundred years ago.
President Fidel Ramos hosted a visit on Thursday (February 12) by the Spanish royal couple to the site of a naval battle which ended 400 years of Spain's colonial rule of the Philippines and replaced it with American colonial rule.
President Ramos told the royal couple that in the Philippines, the mention of Spain reminds Filipinos of its most important contribution, Christianity.
The battle of Manila Bay marked the end of one colonial master and the accession of another a century ago.
During it the United States (U.S.) navy defeated the Spanish armada in a battle which opened the Pacific up to U.S.domination which was unchallenged until World War II when Japan attempted to occupy the Philippines.
The King Juan Carlos and his wife Sofia are on a three-day visit as guests of President Ramos, part of the celebration in the Philippines of the 100th year anniversary of Filipinos' declaration of freedom from Spanish colonisers.
Spain ruled the Philippines for 333 years until 1898 when it ceded the islands to the United States after the battle. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
