- Story Text: INTRO: Hillary Clinton has arrived in Portugal for a four-day visit, the first such trip by the wife of a serving U.S.
president. Her daughter, Chelsea, was accompanying her.
The visit will include some official engagements to strengthen the civil and economic rights of women and children as well as some sight-seeing.
United States (U.S.) First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton met Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Guterres, on Thursday (July 17) at the start of a 4-day visit.
She was also greeted by the Prime Minister's wife, Luisa and actress Maria Barroso, wife of former Portuguese President Mario Soares.
Earlier Hillary had addressed prominent women at the Gulbenkian Foundation on "Early Childhood Education".
She said the success of any society depended on how well it cares for, educates and raises its children and stressed the importance of the earliest years of a child's life.
"They cannot be overlooked or minimised .... it is time for concentrating in our families and our societies on how we can help parents be the best first teachers of their own children that they can possibly be", she said.
On Friday, Hillary Clinton will visit the Roman Catholic shrine of Fatima, 120 km (75 miles) north of Lisbon.
