- Story Text: Tis' the season for holiday music.
This year's selection of tunes comes from a diverse plate of artists from pop, jazz, rock and even a television show.
Jazz man Michael Buble has dominated the Billboard 200 Charts for two weeks with his new CD simply titled "Christmas." With over 1 million copies sold, Buble's album is only the seventh to sell a million copies in 2011. The "Christmas" CD is also a global hit and reached number one on the UK and Canadian charts and is in the top ten in other countries.
The Canadian corner's version of Mariah Carey's 1995 hit, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has reached number one on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart. Buble says he hasn't heard from Carey about his version, but basted in the glory of his success with the song.
"I think her version went to number six, I think that's the highest her version ever went, and my version went to number one," said Buble while jokingly laughing.
Other songs on Buble's album include classics such as, "Jingle Bells," "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and "Silent Night," a selection that Buble said was easy to pick.
"A lot of these tunes when I hear them, take me right back to really warm childhood memories. And so, it was really easy to do that and I mean, my mom had the Bing Crosby record playing through the house through the whole holiday, so that had a big impact on me," explained Buble, who also wrote an original song for the CD called "Cold December Night."
Fellow Canadian Justin Bieber gifted his fans with a 15 song album for Christmas called, "Under The Mistletoe." Carey's song, "All I Want For Christmas," also appears on Bieber's album, but this time as a duet performed with Bieber.
Buble said there is no competition between him and the young heart throb.
"I was so not worried about it that he's one of the guests on my Christmas special. So it's like a Canadian love fest," said Buble, who's Christmas special will air in over 60 markets around the world.
Another Canadian, legendary singer Paul Anka has released his first holiday album in more than 50 years. The offering titled, "Songs of December" features 11 holiday classics.
Stone Temple Pilots front man, Scott Weiland mixes traditional with some unexpected arrangements of his favorite Christmas classics.
His CD, "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" has been in the works for nearly two years and features a reggae version of "O Holy Night" and a jazzy "What Child Is This?" where Weiland channels his inner Van Morrison.
The cast of Glee has released "Glee: The Music, The Christmas Album Volume 2," filled with the shows festive renditions of Christmas staples, "Little Drummer Boy," "Let It Snow" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You," as well as two original tracks "Extraordinary Merry Christmas" and "Christmas Eve With You." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
