- Story Text: The first Qatari Ambassador to Britain since the tiny Arabian Gulf state declared independence in September last year presented his credentials to Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday (May 9).
The Ambassador, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Seif Al-Thani, was escorted to Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty's Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, Sir Michael Fitzalan-Howard, in a traditional horse-drawn state carriage.
Five days after Qatar proclaimed independence, a 1961 Treaty -- under which British was responsible for Qatar's defence and foreign relations -- was replaced by a new Treaty of Friendship providing for "mutual consultations" between the two countries.
The Treaty was signed near Geneva in Switzerland at the lakeside residence of the Emir of Qatar on September 6, 1971 - the same day the British Ambassador arrived in Qatar.
