USA/VARIOUS: Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan discuss their romantic comedy feature film "Made of Honor"
- Title: USA/VARIOUS: Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan discuss their romantic comedy feature film "Made of Honor"
- Date: 9th May 2008
- Summary: LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES (RECENT) (REUTERS) (SOUNDBITE) (English) PATRICK DEMPSEY, SAYING: "Well, I think going to Scotland makes it immediately romantic. As soon as you see the castle and the countryside, it's like 'this is beautiful,' who doesn't want to go there and get married? And it's another character in the movie. And the other thing is, who is the other guy? And we had to find the perfect man, and Kevin McKidd does a great job, he's Scottish, he's got this great rugged look about him, and his character, we wanted to have absolutely, how can you beat a knight, this Duke and everything? And that was important, to have a great guy, but then she has this great line where she says 'you're the greatest guy, you're just not great for me.' I'm paraphrasing. That pretty much sums it up, it's like when two people are meant to be together, they're going to be together."

- Story Text: Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan star in "Made of Honor," which kicks off the slew of romantic comedies this summer.
Patrick Dempsey, who found fame as an 80s film heartthrob and later as the handsome doctor nicknamed "McDreamy" on the popular US television series "Grey's Anatomy," stars in the new romantic comedy "Made of Honor." About a Casanova who finds himself falling for his best friend (Michelle Monaghan) only after she finds the perfect fiancé, "Made of Honor" is sure to be a hit with the ladies, but what about the men they'll bring to the theater? Dempsey thinks this movie is for everyone.
"Well it's a guy's point of view on the whole thing," says Patrick Dempsey, "here's a guy who just dates all the time, and doesn't to settle down, and finds his way through the help of his friends. And that was the thing that we wanted to do, we knew that women would come see a romantic comedy, would the guys come and see it, and if they did come, would they be entertained? And so that was part of the challenge."
Adds Michelle Monaghan, "That's one of the things that really attracted me about this movie is that it's kind of a romantic comedy for guys, which is the way that I see it, it's told from a man's perspective, for once, the guy doesn't get the girl, the guy has a broken heart, it's interesting to see the tables turned, and I think that's really really refreshing, and I think guys can relate to Patrick, he's a sort of guy's guy, even though the girls are really hot for him, he likes to race cars or whatever, he's a good guy."
In "Made of Honor," Dempsey's character, a successful entrepreneur responsible for inventing the cardboard sleeves that flank Starbucks coffee cups, agrees to become Maid of Honor at his best friend's Hannah's wedding. Reluctant to take the traditionally female post, he agrees to after friends convince him that the only way to sabotage the nuptials is from within the wedding party. It doesn't come easy though for Dempsey's character Tom, whose competition is a rugged Scottish whiskey distiller who offers Hannah the faithfulness that she feels Tom cannot provide.
In the film, Tom competes (poorly) in a traditional highland games ceremony, but is also reduced to wearing an extra small Scottish kilt, courtesy of Hannah's cousin, who Tom had seduced but broken up with once before, and who seeks revenge for her broken heart.
Parts of "Made of Honor" are set in Scotland at the ancestral estate of Hannah's fiancé, and filming on location was especially helpful, Dempsey feels, in creating the air of romance in the film.
"Well, I think going to Scotland makes it immediately romantic," says Dempsey.
"As soon as you see the castle and the countryside, it's like 'this is beautiful,' who doesn't want to go there and get married? And it's another character in the movie. And the other thing is, who is the other guy? And we had to find the perfect man, and Kevin McKidd does a great job, he's Scottish, he's got this great rugged look about him, and his character, we wanted to have absolutely, how can you beat a knight, this Duke and everything? And that was important, to have a great guy, but then she has this great line where she says 'you're the greatest guy, you're just not great for me.' I'm paraphrasing. That pretty much sums it up, it's like when two people are meant to be together, they're going to be together."
Adds Monaghan, "It's such a beautiful, beautiful place. We went to Isle of Skye, and it's like a page out of a fairytale, honestly. And for us I think it was such a benefit to shoot there because we're shooting a romantic comedy, and it really elevated the romance of this film, I mean there was castles and rolling hills and wildflowers, and it doesn't get really much more romantic than that, so it was really cool."
