Summary:Designed to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, the Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire 85 years later on November 30 1936. Originally standing in London's Hyde Park, it was moved in 1854 to South-East London. Made of glass and cast iron, the structure was ablaze from end to end within fifteen minutes of the fire starting. Five hundred firemen with 60 appliances fought the blaze, but were unable to save this magnificent monument to Victorian ingenuity.
