- Story Text: The financial crisis of 2008 is played out on the big screen in the new film "Margin Call." The cast made up of Hollywood heavyweights includes Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci and Simon Baker, who said everyone worked well together.
"All of these people collectively - and this is the good part about this particular cast, were all accepting of each other and understanding of each other and all encouraging of each other so there was a real sense of, we are a company," said the Australian.
Over the course of 24 hours the movie followers the players at one investment firm as they try to manage the start of the financial crisis, and what it will mean for the country.
The cast said that making a film about a tough subject that is still affecting so many people was the right thing to do, and is different from the typical Wall Street-type films.
"For us it was really about understand the journey that each of these people has to take through this crisis and how it impacts them personally and professionally. How they were isolated from the larger world in a sense and sort of contained in this building and, you know, it's much more contemplative and much more introspective as a film then I think other movies in this genera have been," explained actor Zachary Quinto, who also produced the film.
The personal lives of the cast seems to be attracting more attention than the on-screen drama. In an article published over the weekend (October 15) actor Zachary Quinto announced for the first time that he was a homosexual.
"It's been unanimously supportive and I've been met with nothing but encouragement and I'm grateful for that," Quinto told Reuters.
For the past month Demi Moore and husband Ashton Kutcher's six-year marriage has been making tabloid headlines. Reports say Kutcher's repeated cheating has the May-December couple heading for divorce, however, both have declined to comment on the rumors.
As the Occupy Wall Street protest celebrates its one-month anniversary, the film, which has been in the works since 2009, is extremely timely. "Gossip Girl" actor, Penn Badgely, who plays one of the younger investment bankers in the film, spent time with some of the protesters.
"It's a really moving thing to be part of something that is so hopeful, you know. I think one thing that is really prevalent down there, the thing that is unanimous is hope," said Badgely.
While this film is centered around the complex collapse, the filmmakers said it's more about the human side of the collapse, and doesn't seek to place blame.
"I think there's a lot that we still don't know because so much of it happens behind closed doors and we may never really know the extent of the corruption or the collusion. And I'm not a financial guy, I don't understand half of what I said in the movie," joked Tucci.
