- Story Text: U.S. President Barack Obama welcomed Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping's willingness to hold constructive talks during a meeting between the leaders on Wednesday (November 12).
Speaking at the meeting, Xi emphasised the importance of the relationship between the two world powers.
"The facts show that the establishment of a new model for the major power relationship between China and the US is line with the basic interests of the people from both out countries, and that it can also help protect the peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia Pacific region and the world."
Obama said that despite differences he was encouraged by "honest and constructive dialogue".
"As we've noted, there are important differences that we have, both practically as well as our vision for our respective countries and our conduct of foreign policy. But what I've been very encouraged by is your willingness Mr President to engage in an honest and constructive dialogue around those differences and ensuring that we manage them in a peaceful and effective way."
Earlier in the day Obama attended a formal reception hosted by Xi, before the two sides sat down for talks.
Obama will travel to Myanmar later for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in the capital Naypyitaw.
