Tacy Macalos of the Philippines held off a furious late rally be South Korea's Choi Jhum Hwan to win the International Boxing Federation Junior Flyweight crown by a unanimous decision in Manila on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Filipino gained points in the early stages of the 12-round title contest. He floored Hwan, the defending champion, in the ninth round with a right to the ribs, bringing the 25,000 fans in the Araneta Coliseum to their feet in support of their local hero.
The contest was a rematch as the pair had fought each other in South Korea 18 months ago when Macalos lost on a controversial split decision.
