  • Story Text: The International Red Cross has made Nicosia in Cyprus its base for sending vital medical supplies to the countries involved in the Middle East war. Another plane load of medicines arrived there on Thursday (October 18).

    Syria has asked for blood plasma and other supplies for wounded soldiers, and a Red Cross chartered aircraft has already flown eight tons of medicines into Beirut, Lebanon for delivery to Syria. Another plane took supplies to Cairo on Friday (October 19). All the countries involved in the war have asked for some help.

    The International Red Cross Committee in Geneva has offered to fly all severely injured prisoners of war back home. The committee said it has a DC-6 plane ready to carry out the repatriations immediately if the countries involved agree.

    The Committee has also criticised Egypt, Israel and Syria for putting prisoners of war on show on television. An official said making prisoners the object of public curiosity and humiliation could be a breach of the Geneva Conventions, but he admitted that a sight of prisoners on television could reassure their families.

    Only Israel has so far replied adequately to a Red Cross request for lists of prisoners. Israel has sent in the names of more than 700 Egyptians and Syrians. Egypt have named only 43 Israeli prisoners - and Syria none at all.
