- Story Text: Highlights as Roberto Cavalli, Versus, Versace and
Missoni present summer collections in Milan.
Who said you can't wear fur in summer? Roberto
Cavalli certainly didn't leave his favourite material
behind in a typically raunchy summer 2004 collection on
Saturday (October 4).
In these penny-pinching days, many people are limiting
their luxury spending to bags and shoes but Cavalli's
chinchilla fur handbags and shawls weren't exactly
entry-level pieces and set the show a cut above much of the
rest of Milan fashion week.
Cavalli stayed true to his skin-tight trousers and
dresses which, for all the layers of material pinned
together, showed masses of leg, back and chest but
freshened the look with some classic and cowgirl elements.
Pencil-thin jeans were slipped under peach or pink
suede chaps with diamante strings sewn down the side like
typical Texan fronds while some of the Dynasty-style
hairdos were squeezed under cowboy hats flipped up at one
side.
Next years trend for capri pants came in plain tan
leather or purple-grey snakeskin, twinned with fronded
leather jackets and blue poplin shirts.
But Cavalli came into his own with dresses that hugged
the top and waved out in folds of ostrich-printed chiffon,
armour-plated diamante cocktail dresses or halterneck gowns
that swept in an X over the breasts but left the stomach
bare.
The finale was a series of satin tennis dresses printed
in the same multicoloured patterns Cavalli sprayed on PVC
handbags to give to the fashionista crowd at the show.
Next summer is going to be hot, hot, hot at Versace
where sun-kissed flesh was as much a part of Saturday's
spring 2004 fashion show as its typical bold colours while
at Prada, the Miu Miu girl toned down to earthy shades.
Neon has flashed on too many a catwalk at Milan fashion
week but it found a natural home under Versace's bright
lights, with everything from bikinis to floaty chiffon
dresses and rib-length shirts printed in bright splatter
patterns.
At Versace's diffusion range Versus, black and white
ruled the roost with jackets, tight knee-length trousers
and billowing swimsuits painted in stark patterns, held to
the body with bright turquoise and pink patent leather
belts.
Versace has never been for wilting violets and the new
collection was no different with dresses baring as much
stomach, thigh and back as they covered, while gold lame
shorts were so tiny they showed most of the models' bottoms.
But there were also sensible pieces for the working
girl like neat white trench coats with a rosette on the
back, jackets with sculpted necklines or a neon pink pencil
skirt and white short-sleeved shirt that would fit in fine
at the office.
Even a neon vest top printed with pop-art pictures of
designer Donatella Versace was thoroughly wearable.
And on Sunday (October 5), Missoni, the house that has
wooed the fashion world with its zigzag knits and prints
for 50 years, was perfectly in tune with next year's trend
for soft colours.
Dusty candy striped satin on a clotted cream background
or a subtle leopard print with pastel patches in the spots
provided the main palette for the collection while block
colours were worked into a butterfly-type pattern on
dresses and jackets.
The Missoni look chimed with next years trends of
flowing but structured dresses with swathes of material
floating off a halterneck bikini top.
Rosita Missoni, who founded the company with her
husband Ottavio 50 years ago, said she was happy her three
children had taken over the company and had confidence in
her daughter Angela who now designs the label.
