It is a snow-covered mountain that is located in the Huaylash province, in the Ancash department. The accident consists of a loosening of a Serac (a mass of ice) with a consequent avalanche which surprised a series of climbers who were visiting our mountains as tourists. I have knowledge that three expeditions have been affected, that include various foreign citizens, including two Israeli citizens, and Argentine-Venezuelan, and some Germans." 1.37 (U7) ANDES MOUNTAINS, PERU (RECENT) (REUTERS - ACCESS ALL) 8. - Story Text: Eight mountain climbers, including four Germans, two
Israelis, a Venezuelan and a Peruvian, have been reported
missing after an avalanche by Peruvian authorities.
A mountain climbing group of four Germans, two
Israelis, a Venezuelan and a Peruvian were missing high in
Peru's Andes after an ice wall collapse, rescue officials said
on Tuesday (July 22).
Officials said the accident occurred on Monday (July 21)
morning while the eight climbers were at 19,000 feet (5,800
metres) above sea-level on the majestic Alpamayo mountain, 300
miles (500 km) northeast of Lima.
"The accident consists of a loosening of a Serac (a mass
of ice) with a consequent avalanche which surprised a series
of climbers who were visiting our mountains as tourists," said
Colonel Luis Garate of Peru's High Mountain Rescue Unit.
Officials said high winds and snow were hampering search
efforts and that rescuers would only reach the site later in
the day after a 20-hour trek on foot.
Helicopters cannot reach the zone because of the poor
weather conditions.
The climbing season in Peru's breathtaking Andes, which
boast the world's highest tropical mountain range and draws
adventurers from all over the world, typically stretches from
mid-April until the end of September.
Garate said they had not completely identified all of the
climbers.
"According to the information here, there are two Israelis
involved, one who responds to the name Guy. We just have that
name. The other young lady is Ofida Zucker," said Garate. "We
also have the name of a Venezuelan-Argentine Sebastian
Villafanic. The name of four German citizens: Sebastian Heler,
Wolfgang Galincer, Ferdinand Stehle, Manfred Gerhard."
They earlier had said there were as many as 18 missing
climbers, including several Argentines.
Last year, at least nine climbers died on Peru's glaciated
peaks.
