- Story Text: Miss Indonesia pageant welcomes first-ever finalist
wearing a Muslim headscarf.
An 18-year-old student from Indonesia's staunchly
Islamic province of Aceh on Friday (August 6) became the
country's first Miss Indonesia finalist wearing the
traditional 'jilbab' Muslim headscarf.
Andina Agustina's breakthrough appearance at the Miss
Indonesia 2004 pageant set her apart from other contestants
from more than 30 provinces across Indonesia.
Representing Aceh province, site of a simmering
separatist rebellion and the only province in Indonesia
that implements the Islamic Sharia law, Agustina said she
was proud to be the first Miss Indonesia finalist with a
jilbab.
"I am very proud to the first contestant wearing a
Muslim head scarf in this contest," Agustina told the
audience during the final on Friday (August 6), which was
broadcast live on television.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country,
but most of its people have long followed a moderate
version of Islam.
The western province of Aceh, however, is much stricter
and its local government imposes Islamic Sharia law in
which women are required to wear a jilbab.
Despite failing to secure the top spot, Agustina
managed to be among the top ten and even won the 'Viewers'
Favourite' title, whose winner was voted by viewers at home
through mobile phone text messages.
Other winning categories at the ceremony include "Miss
Congeniality", "Most Talented" and "Best Traditional Dress".
Judges of the Miss Indonesia pageant had been advised
to adjust their assessment of Agustina with regards to
certain categories.
Points on hair style, for example, would be replaced by Agustina's
skill in co-ordinating her headscarf with her over-all appearance.
The 2004 contest marks the ninth time Miss Indonesia
pageant was held. Unlike other beauty contests, Miss
Indonesia does not allow its contestants to participate in
a swimsuit parade.
Artika Sari Devi, 24, a post-graduate student from
Bangka Belitung province was crowned as Miss Indonesia in
the final, defeating 35 other contestants.
The event was also attended by Miss Universe 2004,
Jennifer Hawkins of Australia, as well as Miss Egypt Heba
El-Sisy.
Protests from religious organisations -- specifically
about the swimsuit parade -- have prevented Indonesia from
sending its representative to participate in
internationally-held beauty contests, such as the Miss
Universe pageant.
A local foundation managed, however, managed to send
unofficial Indonesian representatives to the Miss Universe
contests in 1983 and 1984, but stronger protests and a
bigger public outcry soon stopped it.
The Putri Indonesia Foundation, an organisation set up
in 1992 and current organiser of Miss Indonesia, was able
to send the winner of Miss Indonesia in 1996 to participate
at the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.
The foundation, however, stated then that she was there
only as an "active observer".
